5 things you can do today to improve your work life balance
We could all do with a little help when it comes to restoring our work-life balance, so here are 5 quick wins that you can implement today:
1. Switch off
When you leave the office, switch off your work mobile so you can’t see any new emails or answer any calls. This will allow you to connect with your life outside of the work environment. If you need to, add an away message to your email system saying that you will reply within 24 hours so that people who contact you know what to expect.
Do you often feel like you spend all your time at work, but you’re not really getting that much done? It’s so easy to be distracted by constant interruptions in the office that the project your working on takes a lot longer than anticipated putting you under unnecessary stress. To increase your productivity focus on just one thing at a time. Turn off all your notifications, switch your phone to voicemail and concentrate on the task at hand for a specific amount of time. You will be amazed at how much more you can get done when you’re not having to stop and restart every few minutes.
3. Accept help
You aren’t superman or wonder woman! There is only so much time in the day so be realistic about what you can achieve. If your partner offers to lighten the load, let them, even if they do it differently to how you would do it. Remember done is better than perfect. Consider if you need to outsource some of your daily tasks, for example, could you get a cleaner to free up more time to spend with your family.
4. Leave your desk
How often have you found yourself eating lunch at your desk? Make time to leave your workstation and find somewhere to sit down, relax and eat without thinking about your to-do list. You can find more suggestions for ways to make time for yourself here.
5. Schedule fun
Make plans with friends or your family and schedule it into your diary. Not only will it give you something to look forward to, by scheduling it in you are less likely to cancel at the last minute due to work.
